Many companies are using AI to increase their productivity and efficiency. However, our students are not receiving an education that adequately prepares them for the age of AI. One of the main problems with our education system is that it limits students' opportunities to learn and think creatively. They are often required to memorize textbooks, which stifles their creativity. My daughter's experience studying anatomy is a prime example of this. While traditional medical education in India emphasizes memorizing anatomical structures from textbooks, her curriculum incorporates interactive 3D models and virtual reality simulations. This provides a deeper and more intuitive understanding of the human body. She is not just memorizing; she is discovering and exploring. This approach fosters a genuine interest in the subject, unlike the dry, theoretical methods prevalent in India. I recall an incident with my friend's son, who was a talented programmer. He enjoyed creating his own websites and experimenting with new software. However, he consistently received low marks in school because he disliked memorizing textbooks for exams. Everyone labeled him as incompetent, but in reality, he possessed significant programming skills. Another friend of mine, who studied engineering, was passionate about robotics. However, his college education was focused on outdated theories. He wanted to design robots and experiment with new technologies, but our curriculum did not support this. As a result, he was never able to pursue his dreams. These kinds of problems prevent many students from choosing subjects they are passionate about. They are often forced to choose courses that society deems "safe" and "respectable," which has a significant impact on their future. I remember the story of a student named Ramu. He dreamed of building drones and wanted to use AI and robotics to achieve this. However, he came from a village where he lacked the necessary resources. His school had no one to teach him about these subjects, and he didn't even have reliable internet access. Ramu's dream was ultimately stifled. In such situations, technology can bring about significant changes. Technologies like AR and VR can enable students to learn new things from the comfort of their own homes. We also have much to learn from our villages. Traditional farming methods, water conservation techniques, and the use of natural resources are just some examples that students can directly experience through AR/VR technology. Fortunately, solutions to these problems exist. There are many ways to improve education using modern technologies. Project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, personalized learning, collaborative learning, experiential learning, gamification, microlearning, and Open Educational Resources (OER) are all effective methods for fostering a new approach to learning. A future-ready education system is essential for India's progress in the AI era.
